المفردات - Vocabulary

The curriculum below contains essential vocabulary necessary to understand the Qurʾān. However, most of the vocabulary in Qurʾānic Arabic is derived directly from the Exegesis studied as well as that covered in the Linguistics books.

The expectation is that the above vocabulary is mastered, students writing out each word's ḥarakāt/tashkīl (every single fatḥah, ḍammah, kasrah, and sukūn). This leads to an increased awareness of the language, resulting in a deep understanding of it rather than writing Arabic without the diacritical marks (ḥarakāt/tashkīl) present in the Qurʾān. Thus a mistake in the ḥarakāt/tashkīl renders the word incorrect.

The Arabic Almanac is an excellent resource. It contains the three best Arabic-English dictionaries published till now (Hans-Wehr, Hava, and Lane's Lexicon) electronically. Click on "About" on the upper left-hand side of the screen in order to find out about the project and how to use the website.

Below are some handouts given to students to help them memorize these very important vocabulary items. When taught, they are accompanied with activities specific to each vocabulary list, whether one of the various resources available to Qurʾānic Arabic teachers is used or resources are created by the teachers.
